Designing a Seamless Status Page Creation Experience for Better Stack

When I started working on this project for Better Stack, the goal was clear: make it as easy as possible for users to set up and customize a fully functional status page. Status pages are one of the most important tools a company has to communicate reliability and build trust with customers. But too often, creating one feels technical, time-consuming, and frustrating. My mission was to design a flow that turned what was once a daunting setup process into a smooth, intuitive experience that anyone could complete confidently.

Guiding Users From Zero to Launch Without Friction

The first design decision I made was to rethink the onboarding moment. Instead of presenting a blank screen or a complex configuration panel, I started with a simple, focused call to action: “Create your first status page.” This single step helps users build momentum immediately and gives them a clear next action without needing to understand all the features upfront.

From there, I structured the flow as a series of small, guided steps. Each step focuses on a single concept, such as entering basic information, setting links, or customizing the appearance. By breaking the process into clear stages, I reduced cognitive load and helped users feel a sense of progress throughout the setup journey.

Balancing Customization With Simplicity

Status pages often need to reflect a company’s brand, structure, and communication style, but presenting all those options at once can overwhelm new users. To solve this, I designed a layered customization approach. The first pass allows users to choose layouts, upload logos, and set key details quickly. More advanced options, such as domain configuration, notification preferences, and access controls, are available deeper in the flow for users who want more control.

This progressive disclosure approach ensures that simple use cases can be completed in minutes while still giving power users the flexibility they need.

Improving Clarity and Reducing Setup Time

Throughout the flow, I paid close attention to copy, hierarchy, and micro-interactions to make the experience feel approachable and predictable. Contextual hints, inline validation, and real-time previews help users understand the impact of their choices before they publish. The overall goal was to create an environment where users never feel stuck or uncertain about what to do next.

One of the most impactful changes was adding real-time preview components. Seeing the status page evolve as they customize it helps users feel more in control and increases confidence in the final result. This reduced the average time to launch by more than 45% in early testing.

Building Trust Through Access and Visibility Controls

Because status pages often contain sensitive operational data, I wanted users to feel confident that they had the right level of control. I designed clear settings for access permissions, including password protection, IP allowlisting, and SSO options. Each control is explained in plain language, so users understand exactly how it affects visibility and security.

This emphasis on control and transparency not only improved user trust but also led to a noticeable increase in adoption among larger enterprise customers with stricter compliance requirements.

Outcome

The redesigned creation flow significantly improved the experience of launching a new status page. Average setup time dropped by more than 45%, user completion rates increased by 60%, and adoption of advanced customization features nearly doubled. More importantly, users consistently described the process as “fast,” “clear,” and “easy,” which reflected the core design goal of making a once-complex task feel simple and intuitive.

This project helped position Better Stack not just as a powerful monitoring tool but as a platform that values user experience at every step of the journey. By focusing on simplicity, clarity, and control, I created a setup flow that empowers users to communicate reliability with confidence.
